It is estimated that 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats over the age of three suffer from periodontal disease — a serious deterioration of the gums and supporting bones of the teeth. Yes, it will give your pet bad breath, but left unchecked, the bacteria that cause this disease can enter the bloodstream, causing infection to vital organs. Research indicates that proper oral health may extend the life of your pet by two to five years!

Cutting an onion releases sulfur compounds. Your eyes become irritated by the substance and, in an attempt to get rid of the irritant, they start to tear. You can often tell if someone is a big onion eater because the sulfur compounds enter the bloodstream and then get breathed out—or sweated out.

The same types of gases exist in the mouths of our dogs and cats. The incidence of gingivitis and periodontal disease in cats and dogs over the age of two is extremely high. Bacterial cell death and the degrading process of food and dying cells in the mouth change over time and, like the onion, rearrange themselves into volatile gas. These gases are equally irritating to the gingival tissue in the mouth as onions are irritating to our eyes. Imagine what your pet would say if you could offer them relief from this painful and unpleasant experience.

The more often you brush their teeth the better off they will be. Every day would be the goal. At least once a week with dental treats throughout the week can work very well. There are also oral hygiene solutions you can add to your pets drinking water that helps to promote healthy teeth and gums. The solution has no odor and no taste, but does help to soothe irritated gums as well as soften any plaque that has built up on the teeth already. That way when your pet is given dental treats or has their teeth cleaned/brushed, the plaque comes off that much easier.
